Location: Monument Corridor, Concord, California
Scope: Renovation of 124 units in eight 2-story buildings on an 8.6 acre site including a natural lake with site re-design and improvements.
Design Approach: Faced with a neglected 1960s apartment complex lost in a sea of asphalt paving, we re-designed the site to create a lively pedestrian-friendly community focused on the natural resource of Keller Lake. New landscaped courtyards at each of the eight apartment buildings were connected with pedestrian paths and trails, including a lakeside trail with site-built concrete benches at key viewpoints. In addition, renovation work included the expansion of the community space with a children's library, bathroom, and new terrace, remodeling the office, re-building two swimming pools, and construction of a new playground and trash enclosures.
