Location: Berkeley, California
Scope: Renovation of 35 units of affordable housing for formerly homeless individuals with common area improvements including a new manager’s office, renovated community room, and site improvements.
Design Approach: Vibrant colors, new entry arbors, and a new manager’s office were designed to address a major street and welcome residents and visitors to the property. On site, existing pedestrian areas were improved with attractive landscaping, permanent site furniture, bicycle parking and arbors to connect indoors and outdoors and invite use of a formerly undistinguished courtyard. Renovation work at dwelling units was focused on a voluntary seismic upgrade and energy efficiency upgrades including new windows, lighting, ceiling fans and radiators fed by a new central boiler, water storage and solar pre-heat system.
