Berkeley Design Advocates, Design Award, 2012
Location: Berkeley, California
Scope:Renovation of a 66-unit affordable senior housing building with a focus on common areas and site improvements.
Design Approach: The existing building turned its back to a major street, and only a stair and ramp announced the main entrance. New landscaping and fencing were designed to enhance the experience of people walking by along the sidewalk, improve the appearance of the building from the street and enhance the grounds for residents. A dramatic steel arbor and corner monument sign now announce both the entry and the building within its context. Inside, the project centralized offices off of the lobby to connect residents and staff, and re-allocated existing spaces to create new spaces more conducive for casual socializing, larger gatherings, events and services. Warm, welcoming and vibrant colors matched with durable finishes enliven the project throughout.
